Anyone speak Dutch? We got reviewed again overseas!

Another mixture Review, again overseas!

Luc Meert

English translation, courtesy of Google Translate

Should you be looking for the perfect background music for a restaurant, or even better in your home during a dinner with musical friends, then this "Mixture" Joey Stuckey perhaps is something for you. The blind jazz guitarist did for this album appeal the master key player Tom Rule and the equally gifted percussionists Miguel Castro and Marcus Reddick.

The result is an album with ten songs depicting the aptly named "Mixture". Applicable because the man who started as classical guitar enthusiast displays versatility one can admire. But equally applicable to the collaboration with Tom Rule is that there is usually a different musical style, keeping alive. Certainly, the overtone jazzy colored, say relaxed jazz but also gets a solo squeezed where several rock blues guitarists will be green with envy. His virtuosity on the strings will be admired by lovers of Jazz and will amaze you.

He flirts at times with sounds like Frank Zappa but also can throw in some South American influences on retrieval. An instrumental album and so all songs written by Joey and Tom Rule. An album that never disappoints if you know how to appreciate the style but also one that is already finished before you realize it. Musically class work of great musicians.

More MIXTURE reviews!

Hey, some people are saying some nice things about the album. Sure is nice to hear after all the work we put into this project!

http://smoothjazzdaily.wordpress.com/2012/08/12/joey-stuckey-mixture/
Joey Stuckey is an accomplished blind jazz guitarist ably joined on this album by renowned keyboardist Tom Rule, percussion masters Miguel Castro and Marcus Reddick, and reeds guru Monty Cole.

http://midwestrecord.com/MWR565.html
For a cat that started out in classical guitar, he's turned into a riffing shredder that can choogle along the lines of anyone from Frank Zappa to Al diMeola. With the heart of a commercial jazzbo, Stuckey is immersed in a musical lifestyle that appears to let his work become his play and gives back the enjoyment of the freedom it gives him. Not limiting himself, he revels in showing off his versatility to the point where it feels like this is a cool radio station you tripped over by accident and are glad. Heady stuff guitar geeks will love.

MIXTURE review from The Netherlands

Joey Stuckey’s CD is quite special and filled with surprises. I really like the jazzy spills on it with the virtuosity on the guitar by Joey, truly makes it an asset to the program.

@CriticalJazz: Joey Stuckey Mixture Senate Records 2012

@CriticalJazz: Joey Stuckey Mixture Senate Records 2012

Over at Critical Jazz magazine they had some very nice things to say about MIXTURE:
  • Stuckey is that rare artist that can touch your heart and set your hair on fire simultaneously.
  • ...an impressive hybrid of jazz, fusion, with that smoldering southern sound reminiscent of Muscle Shoals bubbling just beneath the surface.
  • The opening track is the only vocal on the release and laid down nicely by Pam Rule.
  • The band is rock solid....
  • Closing out the release we get the funkier side of Stuckey, clean and precise with the finesse of a surgeon and the melodic heart of a poet.

THIS JUST IN:

Mixture is the most popular new jazz CD for the week among new albums on jazz stations. It was the #1 most added jazz cd at the CMJ Jazz panel.

MIXTURE: Composing is messy.....

Ran across this graphic and thought I'd share it. This is a shot of the chart for Crooked done while we were writing the tune - you can see it's dated August 2010.

This particular song was tricky to put together. On the other side of the sheet was the initial sketch of the form, and we went through several iterations before landing on something we liked.
[Click on the graphic to see a bigger version.]

The Cleaned up version looks a lot nicer.....

What does Joey Stuckey say about his new jazz guitar album MIXTURE?

If you are looking for the next classic jazz recording to add to your collection or just some great tunes to groove to, then we invite you to check out Joey Stuckey's debut full length jazz CD Mixture.

Blind guitarist Joey Stuckey brings flavors of guitar greats like John McLaughlin, Russ Freeman, Steve Khan and Frank Gambale to Mixture so you are sure to get your jazz guitar fix.

With outstanding keyboards from Tom Rule reminiscent of Herbie Hancock, Oscar Peterson and Dave Brubeck, percussion from the masters Miguel Castro and Marcus Reddick [in the vein of Tito Puente and Mango Santa Maria] as well as special guest performances by Pam Rule on vocals and Monty Cole on flute, the music on Mixture bops, swings and rocks.

In the words of Joey Stuckey:
I have had the privilege of working with many great musicians! Some famous and some rather infamous. So when I say that it is a joy to work with someone, it is a big-deal.
Tom Rule is such a musician. Not only is he an amazing musician, educator and all-round-smarty-pants, but he is also a genuine friend - and working with a person like that is really what life is all about. How many times can you say that you got to work with that kind of person? It doesn't get better than that.
It has truly been a high point in my career, thus far, to have worked with him on this project. After playing together for many moons, we finally did something we had threatened to do for years: write together.
We started in late 2010 with a weekly writing session. Wel,l it was supposed to be weekly, but as always, life intruded! Now in 2012, we have 10 jazz tunes to our collection and we are pleased with the results.
So after completing the writing sessions, this was the question: Now that we have written these songs, what are we going to do with them? I decided to make the collection of songs we composed into my next album release and name it Mixture because of the blending of styles of two artists.
This is my first full-length jazz album and I hope you enjoy it as much as Tom and I have enjoyed writing and performing it for you.

So what does Tom Rule say about Joey Stuckey's new jazz guitar MIXTURE?

If you are looking for the next classic jazz recording to add to your collection or just some great tunes to groove to, then we invite you to check out Joey Stuckey's debut full length jazz CD Mixture.

Tom Rule is co-writer of all the music on the album - and played all of the keyboards on the album. So what does HE think about MIXTURE?
What do you get when you combine the music from a blind guitarist who is "as sexy as Elvis with half the fat" with a left-handed dyslexic classically trained jazz keyboardist?

MIXTURE.

This album is a combination of experiences, talents, and musical approaches that come together to create a whole that is greater than it's parts. The music is interesting, full of ear candy, and deep yet accessible - and that's the way we like it!

Joey and I have known each other for longer than either of us care to admit, and that long association and deep mutual respect is reflected in MIXTURE's music. This is jazz guitar and keyboard  with a plethora of spices and sauces that will catch your ear and keep your feet tapping.

So kick back and get mixed up with MIXTURE!

A fabulous Guitar Instructor's opinion of Joey Stuckey's new jazz guitar album MIXTURE

If you are looking for the next classic jazz recording to add to your collection or just some great tunes to groove to, then we invite you to check out Joey Stuckey's debut full length jazz CD Mixture.

Blind guitarist Joey Stuckey brings flavors of guitar greats like John McLaughlin, Russ Freeman, Steve Khan and Frank Gambale, to Mixture so you are sure to get your jazz guitar fix.

Here is what Terry Cantwell, guitar instructor at Macon State College, Mercer University, and Georgia College and State University has to say about MIXTURE:
Friends at Play (very good friends at play). From their very first notes, Joey Stuckey and Tom Rule invite you to sit and dine with them. Their joy for music is immediately apparent. Their melodies are just good clean fun as they dance and dart about, weaving their lines with elegant restraint through tender fields of the soul.
With impeccable rhythm and drive, they insist that your head bobs, your feet move, your eyes light up and you must, you simply must, grin from ear to ear. They play with gorgeous tone and varied orchestration and their phrasing is exact.
There is nothing more exciting then listening to musicians who are on top of their game, and that is exactly what we get here, two of the best, at their best.

Joey Stuckey's MIXTURE: opinion by a professor of Jazz Studies

Hey jazz enthusiasts,

If you are looking for the next classic jazz recording to add to your collection or just some great tunes to groove to, then we invite you to check out Joey Stuckey's debut full length jazz CD Mixture

Listen to what Dr. Monty Cole, Professor of Jazz Studies at Mercer University, says about Mixture:
These tracks are a departure from the high-energy and edgy blues playing that leaps to mind when you hear the name Joey Stuckey.  Smooth jazz is the latest frontier and the legendary guitar virtuoso is blazing a trail of softer hues across the sound spectrum.

Ably partnered with pianist Tom Rule, the group has already established a solid foundation in the new style - just in time for summer.  A host of other musicians make appearances and the result is soothing, satisfying and soulful.

"Jazz Elite" Comments about Joey Stuckey's jazz guitar album MIXTURE

Listen to what some jazz elite are saying about Mixture:

From Professor Steve Crowell, author of The 84 Jazz Equations

Joey Stuckey was already an accomplished player when he came to me for lessons several years ago, wanting to broaden his jazz horizons. We hit it off right away and each lesson is a joy. In fact Joey has learned so much, he is now an accredited teacher of my Jazz Science Guitar Institute. This album reflects a jazzier dynamic, yet it still has the earthy feel of his Georgia roots.

MIXTUREcast #10: We'll See

Episode 10 of MIXTUREcast covers the first track on the new album - We’ll See. This song has a touch of John McLaughlin guitar and even some Joey DeFrancesco-style B3 playing [thanks to the Roland RD700-sx and Native Instruments Kore B4 softsynth].

This episode also features a special audio guest [or a poltergeist, depending on your point of view], and Tom once again has to translate some “Joey audio engineer speak” into plain English.

We’ll See has a great swing feel that would be excellent for a college or high school jazz combo to pick up. The charts will be available over at MacMusicGuy.com in June 2012 - http://www.MacMusicGuy.com.

There’s even some advice for music students around the 8 minute mark - PAY ATTENTION!

....and along with some gratuitous HeeHaw and Dominican Republic references, there’s mention made of an upcoming contest where you can win some free autographed stuff.
