Madame Perry's Salon - She loves MIXTURE!

Back in August 2014 Joey was interviewed for the blog "Madame Perry's Salon". It is QUITE an extensive interview, but well worth the time as it is very well written.

Finally, my last album Mixture, which is my first full jazz release, charted at number nine on the CMJ top 40 Jazz charts for North America and got a lot of great reviews in fusion magazines across the globe.

My friend and co-writer on the project, Tom Rule - who performed piano/keys on the album and is a long time band member in the Joey Stuckey band - was a big reason this record was so successful and I can't thank him enough. We also had two masters of percussion on the record, Marcus Reddick and another long time Joey Stuckey band member and ARC recording artist Miguel Castro. Again, the record wouldn't be the same without them.

MIXTURE remastered - special 2014 edition tunes!

 

Hard to believe it's been TWO YEARS since MIXTURE was released at a phenomenal CD release party. The album actually hit the charts - reached as high at #9 on the CMJ Jazz charts, which was really cool.

A funky review for MIXTURE

 

Jordan Richardson from Something Else Reviews had a few comments about MIXTURE - and even mentioned Pam Rule's contribution!

Mixture, then, is the culmination of all of the above accomplishments. It is, like Stuckey’s impressive bio, diverse, colourful and a little busy at times.

This made me laugh. A LITTLE busy? Have they ever seen Joey work?

Some tracks employ other players, like Tom Rule (keyboards and drum programming) and Miguel Castro (percussion), to better effect. The call-and-response delight of “Too Pooped to Bop” draws a bigger picture, with Stuckey walking the line with some enjoyable fretwork. Rule’s input adds to the jam.

By the way, "Too Pooped to Bop" is a deliberate oxymoron. Now you know!

The fireworks of album-opener “We’ll See,” with Stuckey shooting off blast-like riffs and careening through a dominant solo, is similarly boosted by the grooves of Rule and Castro. Pam Rule’s vocals take things back in time.

So Joey is shooting and careening, Tom and Miguel are groovy, and Pam Rule is a time traveler. I never knew the album was this epic!

MIXTURE hit a high of #9 on the CMJ jazz chart - dropped back in the twenties, and has been rising again this week - it's a #18!

Another MIXTURE review: This one from "This is Book's Music"

The reviews just keep coming in for MIXTURE.

For a bit of luxurious jazz in your late nights or early morning, you may want to check out the latest album from guitarist Joey Stuckey.

Mixture (Senate records) is a 10-track collection of laid back jazz, smooth if you will but not a cheesy smooth. He does take time to get into a bebop vibe with the appropriately titled “Too Pooped To Bop”, but he makes a great effort in showing off his skills on the guitar.

“Sunday Brunch” will definitely take you to the shores of Rio and make you wish you had a coffee, tea, or some kind of liquid refreshment...while “Crooked” seems to be Stuckey getting comfortable in the style of music he loves the most, and thus ends the album in a fine fashion.

Joey Stuckey – MIXTURE:  Man, where has this guitar player been all my life (or yours, for that matter)…. supercharged & ready for prime time from the first note, this is high-energy jazz, to be sure!  After a smashing guitar intro on the opener, “We’ll See“, there are snatches of vocals that are purely psychedelic!  You’ll be able to clearly see every sonic image Joey paints; all the more amazing since he’s a blind player – or perhaps that’s part of what makes him sound so great – either way, you’ll love the “jump” on “Too Pooped To Bop”… you’ll know exactly how that feels after you listen to this, my favorite track of the 10 on the CD.  Joey not only gets a MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, with an “EQ” (energy quotient) of 5.00, he gets the “PICK” of this issue for “best jazz guitar”!   Get more information at Joey’s website.      Rotcod Zzaj

The blind jazz guitarist did for this album appeal the master key player Tom Rule and the equally gifted percussionists Miguel Castro and Marcus Reddick. The result is an album with ten songs depicting the aptly named "Mixture". Applicable because the man who started as classical guitar enthusiast displays versatility one can admire. But equally applicable to the collaboration with Tom Rule is that there is usually a different musical style, keeping alive. Certainly, the overtone jazzy colored, say relaxed jazz but also gets a solo squeezed where several rock blues guitarists will be green with envy. His virtuosity on the strings will be admired by lovers of Jazz and will amaze you. He flirts at times with sounds like Frank Zappa but also can throw in some South American influences on retrieval. An instrumental album and so all songs written by Joey and Tom Rule. • Stuckey is that rare artist that can touch your heart and set your hair on fire simultaneously.  
• ...an impressive hybrid of jazz, fusion, with that smoldering southern sound reminiscent of Muscle Shoals bubbling just beneath the surface. 
• The opening track is the only vocal on the release and laid down nicely by Pam Rule.

Mixture is the most popular new jazz CD for the week among new albums on jazz stations. It was the #1 most added jazz cd at the CMJ Jazz panel.

MIXTURE: Composing is messy.....

Ran across this graphic and thought I'd share it. This is a shot of the chart for Crooked done while we were writing the tune - you can see it's dated August 2010.

This particular song was tricky to put together. On the other side of the sheet was the initial sketch of the form, and we went through several iterations before landing on something we liked.
